“On the eighth day of Holiday Cocktails, my true love made for me…
…eight sparkling peppermint martinis!”
Two firsts for me with today’s featured cocktail from the painted holiday kitchen towel of 12 holiday cocktails — a martini with sparkling wine and with crushed peppermint (candy canes) around the rim. It was surprisingly light and delicious, and the mint flavor did not overtake the experience.
- 2 ½ oz Sparkling Wine (I used Lola Presecco)
- 1 ½ oz vodka (vanilla vodka an option)
- 1 oz crème de menthe liquor
- Splash of Grenadine
In a shaker, combine ice, vodka and crème de menthe and grenadine. Stir gently and strain into a chilled martini glass rimmed with crushed candy canes. Top with sparkling wine and garnish with a candy cane.
We used the creme de menthe supply left over from day four’s grasshopper cocktail — which was green in color, and not white. Can you guess what happens when you mix green creme de menthe with (red) grenadine? It looks dark purple but lightens up a little when the sparkling wine is added. But not the pretty light Christmas red I would have liked to see from our photo. The taste was great, though. Sometimes you just have to get past the optics and dig into the substance to find the goodness.
I will make this cocktail again for Christmas gatherings, but use the white liqueur AND my favorite almond flavored sparkling wine. We are just a few days from a new year and just four more cocktails to go on our journey. Cheers!
